In today’s business scenario, sustainability has gained immense highlights and importance. Companies are integrating sustainability principles and theories in their businesses by pursuing goals beyond their profit maximization and reputation management. Often, sustainable businesses have progressive environmental and human rights policies incorporated. They have started participating in environmental friendly or green activities to ensure that all processes, products and manufacturing activities adequately address current environmental concerns in the process of maintaining profit. Business sustainability requires firms to adhere to the principles of sustainable development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. For industrial development to be sustainable, it must address various crucial issues like economic efficiency, social equity and environmental accountability.
For the business community, sustainability is moiré window dressing. By adopting sustainable practices, companies can gain competitive edge, increase their market share and boost shareholder value. If the sustainable development is to achieve its potential, it must be integrated into the planning and measurement systems of business enterprises. And for that to happen, the concept must be articulated in terms that are familiar to business leaders. The roles of business in contributing to sustainable development remain indefinite. While all business enterprises can make a contribution towards its attainment, the ability to make a difference varies by sector and organization size.
Technology has important effects on business operations. No matter the size of your enterprise, technology has both tangible and intangible benefits that will help you make money and produce the results your customers demand. Technological infrastructure affects the culture, efficiency and relationships of a business. Technology is developed to meet a problem or opportunity. Businesses use technology to extend their abilities and to serve their customers. Business owners or entrepreneurs have the vision to recognize consumer wants and to devise ways to meet them. However, they will need to use technology to accomplish some of these goals, and in most cases, they will have to hire experienced technical people who can use technology to implement these ideas. Nowadays it’s challenging for a business to gain competitive advantage without using technology.
In this context of the debate on sustainability taking the ‘association vs. business’ in today’s digital environment, the North Eastern Management Association (NEMA) in collaboration with Department of Management, Mizoram University aims to bring together these differing perspectives in academia as well as practice for discussion and debate in the 2nd International Conference on “Sustainable Business Management and Information Technology” to be held during 31st October to 1st November, 2019.
